Bastille Day Trip to Argentan

11 - 17 July 2022

In 2020 ten of us had planned to cycle to Argentan to celebrate Bastille Day with our French friends but Covid forced us to cancel it. We have resurrected the trip although three people could not make it, leaving seven of us.

On 11th July we cycle to Portsmouth via various friends for coffee/lunch/tea breaks to get the 10.45 night ferry to Ouistreham arriving about 7.00 on the 12th. After breakfast at the terminal we cycle to Argentan via Pegasus Bridge, my friend Philippe in Caen, Falaise and finally my friend Marie-Annick in Moulins on the outskirts of Argentan. We will stay with local families. We have free time on the 13th to recover from the journey and relax and on the 14th we celebrate Bastille Day with Argentan. Free time on the 15th and then cycle back on the 16th to get the 11.45 night ferry to Portsmouth arriving at 7.00 on the 17th.

Canoe Camping Oxford

20 - 25 July 2022

As I have done for some years now I invited Argentan to come canoe camping in July and up till now they have usually come with about 5 adults. This year, however, we expect fifteen 10-18 year-olds and three adults, all very excited about coming. Thus significant help is needed, particularly with equipment transport and hosting! Please let me know if you can help.

The programme is 20th July paddle to Oxford campsite, 21st explore Oxford either on foot or by canoe, 22nd return to Abingdon and camp at the lock, 23rd explore Abingdon’s rivers and have a duck race on the Ock, 24th pack away and 25th return to Argentan.

Evening "St Edmund" Guided Walk

Thursday 21 July 2022 - 7.30 pm outside St Nicolas’ Church

Edmund of Abingdon, born in the 12th century, is arguably Abingdon’s most nationally important son, but is not well known in the town of his birth. He became Archbishop of Canterbury, had struggles with the king, like Thomas A Beckett, and is buried in France.

On Thursday 21st July we shall meet at 7.30 pm outside St Nicolas’ Church in the Market Place. Anne Dodd will lead a walk in the centre of town to places connected with Edmund. The walk will be no more than an hour with stops en route. We shall end in St Ethelwold’s Garden, with an optional pub visit afterwards. There will be no charge.
