Colmar Churches Visit

1 - 6 May 2012

Three representatives from churches in Colmar will make a planning visit to Abingdon.

Film Show

Thursday 3 May 2012 - 7.15pm Lecture Theatre at Abingdon College, Northcourt Road

We join the local film society for a showing of a contemporary Italian comedy, made in 2010, entitled Loose Cannons (Mine Vaganti), Italy 2010, 110 minutes, Cert 12A.

Mike Bloom of ABCD says: "I found it very well-made (by a Turkish director, all of whose films, I think, are made in Italy or have an Italian connection) and genuinely very funny. It's based around the two sons of a pasta factory owner coming out as gay, or trying to, and the difficulties this creates all round. The comedy largely derives from the members of the extended family having their own guilty secrets."

Pre-film glass of wine and nibbles at 7.15
Film at approximately 7.45
Cheese and wine at 9.40 - Please bring your own wine!
Admission (ABCD and ADTTS members) £6.00 - includes film, food and soft drinks.

Europe Day

Wednesday 9 May 2012 - 7 for 7.30pm at Kitsons Restaurant

As everyone who went enjoyed the Europe Day dinner held last year at Kitsons restaurant in Abingdon, we are returning for this year’s dinner. Please put the date in your diary. We now have the menu. Please make your choices and complete the booking form at the end of the April Newsletter. Places are limited so it will have to be first come, first served.

A Night of Opera

Monday 14 May 2012 - 7.45pm at Amey Theatre, Abingdon School

To celebrate 40 years of twinning with Lucca, this will be a special night of opera with the Italian Soprano, Silvana Froli, from Lucca, and supported by the Kidlington Amateur Operatic Society Chorus.

Many will remember that Silvana sang to us in St Nicolas Church a few years ago (November 2008). An article on one of her recent concerts in Florence said:

“Her natural soprano voice allowed her to learn from great singers, doing final masterclasses with Susanna Rigacci, participating in interesting projects like an American video production with Andrea Bocelli in 1998 and a BBC television interview as the typical Puccini singer just recently. In 2002 she sang in Mozart's Requiem and was very requested as Mimi at the annual "Puccini e la sua Lucca" Festival as well as in many opera houses all over Italy and abroad. At Elba she sang in 2008 Cio-Cio-San in Madame Butterfly. Her repertoire also includes Tosca in 'Tosca' and Turandot in 'Turandot'.”

(See her perform in many videos on YouTube, including a concert in Sint-Niklaas.) So we are in for a special treat on that evening!

Concert Tickets will only be £10.00 and can be obtained from John Smith (01235 525518 or secretary@adtts.eu) or Michael Matthews (01235 520027 or mw.matthews@tiscali.co.uk).

Alternatively, you might like to take a group of friends and make an evening of it. With that in mind ADTTS have got together with Limoncello, the Italian restaurant in Abingdon, to offer a supper and concert package for £25.00 on Monday 14 May. Limoncello will open at 5.45 for us with a special supper menu. You can then walk to the theatre which is less than ten minutes away, or drive of course. You can book tables for any number between 2 and 12 people, but be aware that numbers are limited and so you will need to book quite quickly. If you would like to book a table for supper in Limoncello followed by the concert please contact Stella Carter (stella@bakehouse.supanet.com). She will then reserve a table for you AND also your tickets for the concert.

We wish to make this concert a sell-out, so please contact your friends, local choirs, musical groups, opera society, WI or Townswomen’s Guild, U3A, etc., or you can download and print pdf files of hand bills to distribute or of colour posters to display.

Thank you, we look forward to sharing a wonderful evening with you!
